Nicholas Stupakis

Vice President, Helion

Nick Stupakis currently serves as Vice President of Helion, a subsidiary company of Highmark Health, the third largest integrated healthcare delivery and financing system in the nation. Nick plays an integral role in the development and execution of Helion’s strategy to transform quality, service, and value in the home and community care space through an innovative payer-provider network management model.

As one of the founding members of Helion, Nick has led the development of the value-based partnership structure for Highmark’s skilled nursing facility (SNF), home health agency (HHA), Long Term Acute Care Hospitals (LTAC), and Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRF) networks. This structure is aimed at shifting contracts from traditional, any willing provider contracts, to true value-based contracts, with ‘dashboards’ comprised of core quality metrics including readmissions, discharge to community, length of stay (LOS) variance, and quality star rating that are weighted to determine where a provider ranks within the overall network. In addition, Nick is leading the development of pay for value programs that will reward top-tier providers and penalize bottom-tier providers as a means of increasing the urgency to optimize quality of care for Highmark members and families.

As a means of developing an accountable and collaborative model, Nick has developed and deployed an innovative model of provider engagement, hosting regular meetings with home and community care provider partners to review their dashboard results on an on-going basis and to maintain on-going dialogue on how best HM HCS can assist agencies in achieving value-based outcomes. The Helion Network Performance model is based on a foundation of data-driven, high-engagement relationships that allowed Helion to not only redesign the contracting process, but to also re-develop partnerships in a mutually beneficial, mutually accountable way that best positions providers for success, and accelerates progress toward a shared mission—excellence in clinical and experiential outcomes for members and families. Nick has made it a priority to design a staffing model, comprised of home and community care experts from various disciplines in order to provide a superior level of service to Highmark’s post-acute partners.

Prior to the founding of Helion, Nick served as Director of home and community care at the Allegheny Health Network (AHN), Highmark Health’s provider network. In his role as Director of home and community care, Nick helped to lead the executive team charged with strategic planning and development of AHN Healthcare@Home, a comprehensive home and community care service line within the health system’s continuum of care including a portfolio of integrated companies—Home Health & Hospice, Home Infusion, and Home Medical Equipment—under a single brand and with a team of transitional care coordinators who seamlessly coordinate transitions of care and become the single point of contact for patient, family and provider.

Prior to his tenure with Highmark Health & AHN, Nick worked in the Skilled Nursing and Home Health industries and played key roles on regional and national strategy teams for operations, growth and innovation.
